At Anthony Roper we believe in the importance of a strong and supportive transition between pre-school and a child’s first year at school. As part of this process we visit children within their nursery setting, provide a ‘taster’ session and hold a parent information evening. This is usually held in June or July. This is an opportunity for you to meet the Reception team.
Please see below for some suggestions of how you can help your child become ready for school life at Anthony Roper.
1. Go to the toilet by him/herself
2. Use a handkerchief
3. Be able to use a knife and fork
4. Do up own buttons and zips. Dress and undress themselves
5. Change shoes, wellingtons, plimsolls
6. Hang up coat
7. Recognise their own name
8. Understand and carry out an instruction
9. Sit quietly for a short period of time
10. Recognise and name primary colours
11. Listen to a story without interruption
12. Recognise numeral of own age and then 1-10
13. Write his/her own name
14. Be familiar with a book- handling it correctly
15. Have experience of “turn taking” in games, ie snakes and ladders
“The ways in which the child engages with other people and their environment – playing and exploring, active learning, and creating and thinking critically – underpin learning and development across all areas and support the child to remain an effective and motivated learner.” (Development Matters 2012)
What to expect, when? The purpose of the is to help you as a parent/carer find out more about how your child is learning and developing during their first five years, in relation to the EYFS. Children develop more rapidly during the first five years of their lives than at any other time. This booklet has been written to help you as a parent know what to expect during these vitally important years by focusing on the seven areas of learning and development which are covered in the EYFS.
Early Learning Goals
At the end of Reception (The Foundation Stage), each child will be assessed against 17 key areas called the Early Learning Goals (ELG’s). This is known as the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Profile. For each early learning goal, teachers must judge whether a child is meeting the level of development expected at the end of the Reception year (‘expected’), exceeding this level (‘exceeding’), or not yet reaching this level (‘emerging’).
The completed EYFS Profile also includes a short commentary on each child’s skills and abilities in relation to the three key characteristics of effective learning. This will support future curriculum planning and will provide the Year 1 teacher with important information about each child’s approach to learning.

Children are able to choose their own reading book twice a week. We encourage parents to read at home with their children and realise the importance this can have on a child’s development.
