BLOG Term 2 2018-19

Welcome back to Term 2 and many thanks for your many emails and letters in support of the Governors’ letter regarding funding. As you should recognise, the problem is not school specific and funding is an issue that needs addressing across the country. The flat budgets allocated to schools, and the limited capital funding available are no match for the rising costs of education and an aging school building. Governors will provide regular updates regarding the use of any money donated to the Solomon Cox Charity. (See web-site/newsletter for further information regarding the fund and how it came to be named.)

I would also like to congratulate pupils and parents on much improved attendance last term. The average attendance for the term was 97.3%, with a grand total of 186 pupils (61% of the children) achieving 100% attendance. The last published National average for 2016/17 was 95.9%, so we are doing well, but need to keep it up, mainly by avoiding any holiday during term. I have attached a letter which outlines the positive aspects of regular school attendance and some ways that you may be able to help.

At the end of last term we celebrated Harvest Festival at St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church in Farningham. This year we raised money for ‘Water Aid’ to help provide fresh water supplies for villages in Africa. The PTA provided every child with a bottle of water to drink and they were encouraged to fill the bottle with coins and return it to the Harvest service.

During half term the school was set a Scientific Challenge – to build a marble run, designed to take a set length of time for the marble to complete the course. Mrs. Pike provided the marbles and the children (and parents) provided the resources and the creativity!! We expected about 10 entries and received over 60 – some taking 2 people to carry in to the building. AMAZING…… Watch this space for the next challenge!!

As the nights start to draw in and we move towards Christmas, there are many seasonal and exciting things to look forward to. The Village Firework display this year was held on Saturday 3rd November and the Guy was once again been made by children from Anthony Roper, with support from Mrs. McCoy.

The PTA Christmas Fair this year will be held on Saturday 24th November from 12pm – 3pm in the school hall. There will be the usual huge variety of Christmas stalls and activities and of course… Father Christmas and his elves. It would be great to see you all there for mulled wine and turkey rolls!!

The Christmas Choir will soon be invited to take part in our traditional 9 Lessons and Carols Service on 11th December, this year being held at 6pm in St Peter and St Paul’s Church in Farningham.

We have much to look forward to and so much to achieve in Term 2. Thank you for your continuing support and your ideas for making our school the best place it can possibly be for our children, providing the best education and memorable experiences.

BLOG Term 1 2018-19       WELCOME BACK

Welcome back to a new school year!! I don’t know where the time goes as we are already in week 3!  A new year is always an exciting time with fresh opportunities and new challenges for all of us as we get to know new teachers, new children and new parents.

We welcome any new pupils joining our school, in particular the new reception children starting in Cottontail and Puddle Duck classes. It’s good to see everyone settling in so well and finding their feet.

I hope that you found the recent opportunity to meet with your child’s class teacher valuable, as it gives an insight into the day to day organisation of the individual classrooms and the opportunity to ask questions. For those of you unable to attend the meetings, details have been shared on the web-site under the class pages, along with a copy of the termly newsletter.

Please keep a copy of this, as it will provide information useful throughout the term.

The school diary is now available on line, so please check in the next few days and put future events into your personal calendars.  Please check back on this, as dates can be added or changed.

We have already celebrated Roald Dahl day and the Young Shakespeare Company have visited school with an interactive performance of Macbeth for our Year 5 and 6 pupils. This is a great introduction to one of our themes for the year – Reading for Pleasure – Reading is Fun!!!

We have relocated the library to the top corridor and it is already becoming more vibrant and a well-used resource. Many thanks for our parent librarians who have ‘volunteered’ to help make this happen!! Watch this space for more exciting reading events over the year.

We are celebrating Harvest on Monday 8th October this year and we will be asking your children to collect cash for Water Aid – more details to follow.

And…. please don’t forget the PTA AGM on Thursday 4th October.

Every parent is automatically a member of the PTA – you don’t have to be on the committee to join in, so if you are interested please contact anthonyroperpta@gmail.com or come to the AGM on Thursday 4th October in the school hall at 3.15pm. We will be showing a film to entertain the children of parents who wish to attend!!!

There is much to celebrate and to look forward to. Thank you as always for your continuing support and encouragement.

Looking forward to working together with you and your children; sharing another positive and rewarding year.
